Is the point of a first degree equation in general form to prove whether or not a value is true or false?

or to solve for X ?

don't understand the purpose of this type of equation , for example :

5(x+2) - 15 = 0Is the point of a first degree equation in general form to prove whether or not a value is true or false?
Typically, you'll want to simplify the expression to solve for the variable.

In this case:

5x + 10 - 15 = 0

5x = 5

x = 1
