WHY would an erection take blood away from that, and not from a less oxygen sensitive organ, like the lining of the intestine or kidneys?

I think that is fabricated. An erection is a natural cause. Like you said blood flowing to the penis, erects it. Your IQ does not decrease everytime you have an erection. If that was the case, adult film stars should be mentally handicapped. The brain does not only control your IQ. It affects motor skills, etc. While it may or may not decrease brain function, that does not mean it decreases your smarts.
